To the commercial detriment of manuka bushland owners across the country, East Cape manuka agri-biz operators have claimed that triketone is the most important antimicrobial active found in manuka oil. This is not true. Trikeone is a naturally occurring herbicide. However, this spin has enabled these producers to (1) marginalize the perceived commercial value of circa 700,000 hectares of manuka bushland across the rest of the North island and (2) improperly drive up the price of "triketone-rich" oils to the detriment of other Growers and the consumer who mistakenly believes this spin.
Researchers from a US chemical company found that "leptospermone" (i.e. triketone) was a natural herbicide that killed off invading plant species. Leptospermone was then optimized into thousands of compounds with research finding several were found to be effective but were too toxic. There are now several members of the triketone class of HPPD inhibitor herbicides on the market today produced from synthesized triketone.
One should note that the Australian standard for "tea-tree" oil is based on a high terpinen-4-ol count, a Monoterpenol,. A derivative of monoterpene i.e. as found in abundance in the oils from the far-north. Especially kanuka. No national standard has been developed for either manuka or kanuka essential oil at this time. When it is developed, it must be seen to be representative of our "tea-tree" on a national basis. It must not go the way of the "UMF" factor in honey and the new MPI definition of honey which (1) favours East cape producers and (2) economically marginalized honey-farmers throughout the far-north, decimating their income. The good news is that the triketone content in oils from the far-north do not exceed 2% in either manuka or kanuka oil.
The abovesaid table is built off a 100 ha manuka/kanuka bushland block template. The following assumptions / statements apply in each of the four columns that show the 100 ha harvest base.
