Kanuka Oil - for "Him"

It was customary for Kanuka leaves and the oil of those leaves to be used by the warriors (men) of the tribe. This custom originated because the kanuka tree grew to a height of 15M and lifespan of up to 150 years. A good omen for the longevity and strength that all tribal warriors sought.

Manuka Oil for "Her"

With a height of only 5 metres and a lifespan of 30-50 years, the manuka tree and its oil was the healing oil for use by wahine (women) of the tribe.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE TERPENE & TERPENOL CONTENT

The oil of both Leptospermum Scoparium (manuka) and Kunzea Ericoides (kanuka) have a high terpene and terpenol count which deliver a wide range of therapeutic health and wellness benefits. Essential oil of both manuka and kanuka are widely recognized as being highly efficient health & wellness oils that delivered a range of medicinal remedies for the native peoples of Aotearoa/NZ for hundreds of years through Rongoa (traditional medicinal) practices. The manuka oil from Northland is far richer in terpene and terpenol compounds than the triketone heavy oil from the East Cape region. The very low trikeone count found in the oils from Northland  opens the door to a wider potential range of topical and ingestible therapeutic health and wellness applications.

TERPENE - TERPENOL OIL MARKET LEADERSHIP

The Co-Op’s kaupapa (objective) is to become a major player in the manuka and kanuka oil sector backed by, (1) contracted long term resource supply from  Grower-Producer Co-Op members, (2) delivering a fair Annual Farm Gate Payment price for supply, (3) product profit-sharing with Grower-Producers arising from value chain integration, (4) paying a cultural resource preservation extraction tiringa (royalty) to the customary owners of the whenua and (5) issuing intergenerational (Transacting Member) shareholdings to Grower-Producer members as part of the value package.

THIS REQUIRES – RESOURCE CONTROL

The Co-Op’s business development strategy portends to operate as an alternative to the traditional manuka industry players in Aotearoa/NZ who will increasingly lose access to Manuka rich  lands (whenua) to “whanau-on-the-manuka-whenua” owned, operated and controlled cooperative enterprise. Raw material supply chain access and control is a long-term operational pillar of the Co-Op. A supply chain that local landowners are ideally positioned to control as they steadily move, hectare by hectare into a dominant raw material supply control position from their whenua from which two of the world’s highly sought-after natural resource comes from. Manuka & Kanuka oil.

INVESTOR PROTECTION

No investor will come into an essential oil processing enterprise whose product supply line is under threat and/or not guaranteed. A threat that the Co-Op is never likely to face because as a local landowner “owned” organization, it works every day to deliver maximum economic benefit from traditional native natural resource Taonga (treasure/resource) back to the landowners and the traditional native owners of the country before the colonial era land confiscations.

CO-OPS DELIVER

An Auckland University of Technology (AUT) research paper demonstrated that the cooperative form of commercial activity is the structure most suited to cater to traditional Maori culture, custom and commercial protocols at tribal level. The Mataatua Manuka Cooperative is a registered Cooperative company and has as its kaupapa (objective) to build an NZ$1B+ manuka and kanuka based cooperative enterprise within one decade.

Terpenes come from secondary metabolites. The key building block of the secondary metabolite is a five-carbon molecule called isoprene which plants use to produce terpenes, Molecules made from two or more isoprene’s, the complex chemical compounds found in essential oils extracted from plants. The principal terpenes are classified by the number of Isoprene units in the molecule. e.g. Monterpenes, Sesquiterpense, Diterpenes etc.
